General outline type plans are typically sufficent for the first year or so (again, depending on where you are angry giant badger men wont wait for you to build a wall, but neighboring goblins may take years to visit). Start planning how you want to defend the fort right from the beginning, even if you don't plan to build those defenses until later. Alligators, badgers, keas and langurs will kill your dwarves and/or steal their stuff if you aren't prepared for them.įarms, underground and/or above ground to feed your dwarves. Shelter for your dwarves and their stuff. In general, however, and depending on what environment you have embarked in, the priorities are: If you haven't already, I recommend you at least skim over the getting-started guide on the DF wiki (link in the side bar on the right). The wiki is your friend, and should be consulted constantly, tons of good info to be found there. One you get this far, you should be in pretty good shape. I typically assign manager and bookkeeper both to a non-miner, so I don't have to worry about those responsibilities delaying the construction of my long term fort, and vice-versa.īuild a trade depot outside the entrance (or inside if there's room, and you make sure the path from the outside to the depot is at least three tiles wide) and start cranking out some mugs or crafts from the crafters are shop so you can trade when the caravan comes. ![]() You'll probably want to promote a dwarf to manager as soon as possible so you can start to automate production a bit. ![]() Also, setup a pasture zone outside for all grazing animals you don't want to butcher from the get-go. Setup a garbage dump zone outside to prevent miasma from butchering. Make sure to build a lever inside and link it to the bridge. You'll want to put in a drawbridge at the entrance for security (make sure it raises the right direction). Start farming plump helmets as soon as the farm plot is setup so you can convert them to booze at the still.īuild 10 barrels for food/drink and 10 wood bins for finished goods, etc. With the leftover space in the main area, you'll want to create a large stockpile designated to hold most if not all of the goods stored in your wagon. Build your main workshops in the big room: mason, carpenter, mechanic, still, craftsdwarf, butcher and maybe kitchen. User a third for an indoor farm, and a fourth as the manager's office. I use one of the smaller rooms for a dining/meeting area, and another for a dormitory. I usually do a 10x20 or so main room with a few smaller rooms directly off off it. ![]() Also, make sure the entrance is at last three tiles wide if you plan to have an indoor trade depot. Make sure it's at least partially in the sand/soil/clay so you can do indoor farming. Next, carve out a temporary home one or two levels below the surface.
